The origins and fates of the Atlantic salinity maximum water (SMW), formed through excess evaporation in the tropics and subtropics of both hemispheres, are studied using monthly mean outputs of a numerical simulation of the world ocean climatological circulation. After defining formation domains from the surface salinity field and the vertical stratification, a Lagrangian technique is used to estimate the formation rates and main pathways in each hemisphere and the role of this water in the framework of the warm water return flow of the meridional overturning cell. Formation rates around 9 and 11 Sv are found in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres, respectively. While the export of the southern SMW from its formation area is realized by the western... |

Several earlier studies underpin the important role of dissolved organic matter and more particularly urea in phytoplanktonic nitrogen uptake fluxes. Generally, the determination of urea concentrations relies on the formation of an imidazolone-thiosemicarbizide complex, a complexation which requires very accurate temperature control when carried out at high temperature. It is also possible, however, to obtain reliable results with a room temperature procedure. The measured abundances for both complexation at high temperature (85 degree C, 20 min) and at ambient temperature (22 degree C, 72 h) are closely comparable. Lower values are observed for temperatures <10 degree C though. Moreover, a comparison of both techniques reveals similar precision... |

Polyurethanes are frequently used in underwater applications. They are required to resist the marine environment over long periods of immersion but the multiplicity of resin formulations makes material selection difficult. Accelerated tests are essential to guarantee long term integrity. This paper presents results from an experimental study in which polyurethane samples of two hardnesses, 40 and 90 Shore A, have been subjected to immersion in artificial sea water for periods up to two years at temperatures from 50 to 100 degrees C. In parallel samples have been immersed at sea in the Brest Estuary for up to five years. Mechanical properties have been measured on tensile specimens after ageing. The accelerated test results and FTIR analysis indicate that... |

Polymers are widely used in marine environments due to their excellent properties and good weathering resistance. Despite this extensive use, their long term behaviour in such an aggressive environment is still not well known. To assess the polymer durability within reasonable durations, it is essential to perform accelerated ageing tests to accelerate the degradation kinetics but without any modification of the degradation process. This study therefore proposes and validates accelerated ageing tests to study marine ageing of a silica-filled chloroprene rubber (CR) used for offshore applications. Several accelerated ageing protocols are investigated for temperatures ranging from 20 to 80 degrees C in renewed natural seawater. The ageing consequences are... |

Relatively few investigations have employed electrical methods in the submarine environment, which may be promising for mineral deposits or threatened by environmental problems. We have measured the electric field using both disk and bar electrodes in the sea water at three different levels: sea surface, seven meters deep, and sea bottom at a depth of ten meters, employing a 2 m spacing dipole-dipole array with 7 array spacings of investigation, and 13 values of frequencies at steps of (2N hertz, N = -2, -1, 0, 1, 2,.....10). The measurement allowed the analysis of the electric field as a function of frequency and spacing, and of the spectral induced polarization. Modelling and interpretation of the apparent resistivity yielded a good fit with previous... |

Chemical aspects of the San Jorge Gulf benthic system, Argentina (2005-2010). A new contribution on the chemical aspects of the San Jorge Gulf benthic system in the distribution area of shrimp Pleoticus muelleri (Spence Bate, 1888) during 2005-2010 is presented. Concentration of dissolved oxygen in bottom water and mix layer and of total organic matter (TOM), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), chlorophyll a (Chl a) and phaeopigments (Phaeo) in surficial sediments were analyzed. The origin and nutritional value of TOM deposited were also assessed through the C:N ratio. Water samples were collected during the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP) seasonal research cruises in the period 2005-2010. Sediment samples... |

Water samples were collected around the communities of a hydrothermal mussel, Bathymodiolus sp., in the Lucky Strike (1700 m depth) and Menez Gwen (850 m depth) areas, Mid Atlantic Ridge, and analysed for chemical constituents. The environment surrounding the organisms consists in sea water (88 to 100%) mixed with hydrothermal fluid with pH between 6.2 and 8, Sigma S (H2S + HS-) concentrations from 0 to 62 mu mol l(-1). High dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations suggest a highly productive ecosystem. Production of ammonium and DOG, consumption of nitrate and sulfide in the vicinity of the organisms are among the environmental changes found in relation with local biological activity. Concentrations of Cu and Pb were high, implying that the organisms... |

The quick evolution of fish farming in Europe, and its development towards the open sea needs suitable farming tools. These tools must withstand the difficult sea states, but they must be easy to use, well adapted to the fish farming and not too much expensive. This book helps the design of such tools. It defines the solicitations of the sea on all the structures, and presents rules and methods to control these solicitations. Here, a structure is composed of a rearing support, a mooring system and equipments. This book describes these components, class them and gives lists of providers. The rearing support can be a cage, a group of cages or a boat. The support can float or to be submersible. The mooring system can be made up ropes, chains, anchors,... |

An experiment was designed totally randomized to study the influence of different rate of Na+/K+ (5, 30, 55, 70, 95 and 120). Massive mortality was presented to the sixth day of the treatments I and III (Na+/K+=5 and Na+/K+=120), to the seventh day the treatment V (Na+/K+=95) and to the eighth day of the treatment IV (Na+/K+=70). The treatments II and III (Na+/K+=30 and Na+/K+=55 respectively) they stayed in the time, when indicating a bigger tolerance of the postlarvae in these ranges of Na+/K+; however, the mortality of the treatment II were significantly bigger (p <0.01) that in the treatment III, in which 90-100% survival was observed. The results indicate a better physiologic answer of L. vannamei postlarvae to relationships Na+/K+... |

Polymers are widely used for passive thermal insulation coatings on steel pipe in offshore oil and gas production. In this industry, structures used in deep sea have to be reliable, as they are in service for more than 20 years in a very severe environment: sea water, hydrostatic pressure and temperature gradient. One of the main questions is how to test and predict the lifetime of such structures in the laboratory? This study presents one approach that has been developed to characterize and predict the degradation of polymers used as thermal insulation materials. This paper is dedicated to polyurethane (polyether based) degradation in sea water at high temperature. Ageing has been performed in natural sea water under hydrostatic pressure at temperatures... |
